The Cerrado is a savanna in the centre of Brazil. It is one of the world's oldest and most diverse tropical ecosystems and the largest savanna in South America. The core areas are located on plateaus (elevation from 500 to 1,700 m) in central Brazil. The Cerrado borders the Amazon Basin on the north and is mainly located in the states of Goias and Minas Gerais. With an area of two million square kilometres it occupies 20% of the land area of Brazil
